Resveratrol-aging

RESVERATROL is a phytoalexin anti-oxidant that is produced from the skin of red grapes, Japanese knotweed root, and other plant sources. It is being hailed as the most promising nutritional discovery in modern times and it is being attributed to a host of beneficial health effects. For this reason, we dedicate this site to anti-aging and the research that is ongoing to find ways that Scientists can extend the life span. It also touches on the contribution that the compound resveratrol may bring to this research.
Aging
Would you like to stay young and healthier for longer? Of course you would and hopefully with scientific breakthroughs, there may be help on the way to do so.
Aging is the accumulative result of universal deteriorative processes such as oxidation, molecular damage, wear and tear, or accumulation of adverse by products. We age just like other items around us. In reality, the Aging process is a passive result of an organism’s inability to better resist fundamental deteriorative processes.

Imagine the possibility of having an anti-aging drug that could keep you young and healthy. A drug that could mitigate the progress of major diseases like Alzheimer’s, cancer, and heart disease. Age and disease is in fact the same thing, delay diseases and lifespan increases. Could such a drug ever become available? It would appear so and the information provided below will give you some knowledge of the movers and shakers in the scientific world that are looking to slow down the aging process.

Since the early 90,s Scientists have been investigating the effects of calorie restriction.
Calories restriction or CR as some people refer to it is a diet that has all the normal healthy ingredients but contains 30% fewer calories than usual .Research which put mice on such a diet from birth showed that the mice lived 40% longer than mice that were fed normally.
CR is understood to trigger an important enzyme, one that plays a key role in orchestrating the behaviour of energy producing processes in the cell. So in times of stress (food shortage) fundamental cell processes were being optimized to keep the creature youthful (fertile) for longer periods. So a gene that controls aging, once it is stimulated by CR can delay and mitigate every major disease from Alzheimer to cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
For those not wishing to spend their lives on a calories restrictive diet, resveratrol may be the answer. Resveratrol appears to have the same effect as CR in stimulating the gene that slows down the aging process. Most research on this gene  which is called SIRT1 has concentrated on its ability to regulate and protect mitochondria. Such research suspects that the breakdown of mitochondria is among the most important causes of cell-level changes that eventually cause the body tissues to degenerate with age. The damage accumulates slowly until hitting some tipping point of malfunction at which stage disease arrives rapidly. Resveratrol,s ability to engender new mitochondria is especially exciting because it seems the fresh ones are more efficient than the worn mitochondria they repair.

Could the aging answer lie within the mystery of a teenage girl called Brooke Greenberg? Brooke is a girl born in Jan 1993, 17 year of age but at 16lb in weight and just 30in tall, she is still the size of an infant. Scientists are hoping to gain new insights into the mysteries of ageing by sequencing the genome of a 17-year-old girl who has the body and behavior of a tiny toddler. Until recently she had been regarded as a medical oddity but a preliminary study of her DNA has suggested her failure to grow could be linked to defects in the genes that make the rest of humanity grow old. If confirmed, the research could give scientists a fresh understanding of ageing and even suggest new therapies for diseases linked to old age.

Richard Walker, a professor at the University Of South Florida School Of Medicine, who is leading the research team, believes that Brooke’s condition presents them with a unique opportunity to understand the process of ageing. According to him,
“we think that she has a mutation in the genes that control her ageing and development so that she appears to have been frozen in time. “If we can compare her genome to the normal version then we might be able to find those genes and see exactly what they do and how to control them.”

In a recent paper for the journal "Mechanisms of Ageing and Development," Walker and his co-authors, who include Pakula and All Children's Hospital (St. Petersburg, Fla.) geneticist Maxine Sutcliffe chronicled a baffling range of inconsistencies in Brooke's aging process. She still has baby teeth at 17, for instance. And her bone age is estimated to be more like 10 years old.
"There've been very minimal changes in Brooke's brain," Walker said. "Various parts of her body, rather than all being at the same stage, seem to be disconnected."
Brooke Greenberg was born in January of 1993. She’s now 17 years old but she physically looks to be about one. Doctors have long been baffled by her condition, sometimes referred to as Syndrome X, because no one knows what it is. She seems to be the only living person in the world with her peculiar defiance of aging.
If we are to believe people like Aubrey De Grey , a British Researcher on aging who suggests that he has drawn up a roadmap to defeat biological aging. He also proposes that the people who can live well beyound 150 years have already been born.
In a TV programme by RTE called "The End of Aging" , it suggest that for some people they can definetly look foward to living beyond the average age of approx 75 years. The programme outlines various things that help to keep us young.

Contributors to anti-aging research include individuals such as

Andrew Dillin -Salk Institute for Biological Studies, working on the genetic & molecular mechanisms that regulate aging and aging related diseases.

Aubrey de Grey - English author & theoretician in the field of gerontology

Leonard P. Guarente Professor of Biology M.I.T, working on the mechanism of aging

Paul F. Glenn - Founder of Glenn Foundation for Medical research, a non profit foundation devoted to supporting basic research in molecule biology of aging and age related disease -

Walter Pierpoali – prominent anti-aging researcher, among his contributions have been in the development of neuroendocrine theory of aging.

David Sinclair - Harvard University professor, Biologist, best known for his research on the biology of lifespan extension

Cynthia Kenyon - American Biologist, known for her genetic dissection of aging

TILDA , The Irish LongituDinal Study on Ageing.

“To Age or Not to Age”
A new documentary by Robert Pappas. This documentary tracks the pioneers of the field of anti-aging research and explores the discoveries in aging and its relationship to diseases. We, the writers of this website had the opportunity to view this documentary and we think it is a documentary that is very much worth watching.

The End of Aging
A tv programme  by RTE which looks at ageing and how our average lifespan is extending and the implications for individuals and society.
